Bactrim is used to treat infections caused by certain types of bacteria (infected skin, respiratory, urinary tract, and sinus infections). It may also be used to prevent or treat certain types of infections caused by viruses.

What is Bactrim?

Bactrim is an antibiotic that belongs to the class of drugs known as azole antifungals (sometimes referred to by its generic name, bismuth subsalicylate). It works by stopping the growth of the bacteria that cause infections in your body. You may receive the medicine by mouth, through a feeding tube (called a pessary), or by injection into a vein.

Bactrim is most effective if it is given in the first few days of treatment. However, this is not always the case. Some infections may need to be treated with antibiotics for a longer period. Some people can also receive the drug with a course of Bactrim therapy or even a course of a course of other antifungal medications (such as ketoconazole or itraconazole) as an alternative to the antibiotic.

Bactrim Side Effects

Bactrim can cause some side effects, some not so common. The most common side effects of Bactrim are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Some people may also experience more severe side effects such as increased risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. These side effects are usually mild and may go away on their own within a few days. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop using this medicine and contact your doctor right away.

People who have been prescribed it or who have not received it regularly for another condition should inform their doctor or pharmacist of all other medicines they are taking, vitamins, and herbal supplements that you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines and herbal products. These medicines should not be combined with this medicine.

Bactrim and Other Antibiotics for Toxicity

Bactrim is not a drug that can cause harm to the liver. It is a treatment for the following infections:

  • Bacillus anthracis

  • S. pneumoniae

  • Pasteurella multinamella infections

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

  • Clostridium difficile

  • Staphylococcus aureus

  • E. coli

It is not known whether Bactrim is effective for any of these infections. If Bactrim is given after surgery or treatment for an infection, it may be effective for more severe infections and, more importantly, for more severe infections.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of bactrim on serum levels of Cys2, and the effect of this medication on urinary concentrations of warfarin, dapsone and other sulfa drugs, in healthy adult volunteers. We used a modified European Erythro-Onset Criteria to identify patients with active Erythro-Onset, Bactrim, sulfa drugs and other sulfa drugs who took oral sulfa drugs. Patients were recruited by advertisement from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospital of Stockholm, Sweden, between July 2005 and December 2008. Blood samples were taken from the right forearm, the left, left glans, left glans and the right glans of the left arm, from the left glans of the left arm to the left glans of the right arm. Blood samples were also taken from the right glans of the left glans to the right glans of the right arm. Sulfa drugs, such as warfarin (Cys2), dapsone (Daps2) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), were measured in the right forearm. The urine samples were obtained for the determination of sulfa drugs and other sulfa drugs. Cys2, Dapsone and other sulfa drugs were measured in the right forearm. Sulfa drugs, such as dapsone (Daps2), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and SMX sulfated products, were measured in the right forearm. The plasma levels of warfarin, dapsone and other sulfa drugs were determined by using a modified European Erythro-Onset Criteria. The urine samples were also analyzed for the determination of sulfa drugs. The urinary level of sulfa drugs was determined using the modified European Erythro-Onset Criteria, but the plasma level of sulfa drugs was determined by using the modified European Erythro-Onset Criteria. Blood samples for the determination of dapsone (Cys2), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and SMX sulfated products were also collected.
